Gypsy Stranger
Shannon Wurst

The electric lights softly glow
As the band steps up to the microphone
And you take my, take my hand

Couples lining up and down in rows and
Dresses spin like kaleidoscopes
Balance, balance and swing

You're as handsome as
The tune you hum
Oh where did you say that you come from
You been travelin', travelin' around

Gypsy Gypsy look me in the eye
I'm tipsy, tipsy, toeing on the plywood floor
Spin me, spin me, spin me 'round
I'm dizzy, dizzy, won't you catch me now
I'm falling, Gypsy Stranger

The tune has turned, better ask me quick
Before another man takes his pick
Now it's too late, you're too late

Raining Raining thunder now
where did you go to any how
I'm wandering, wandering 'round

Thunder, Thunder, Lighting strikes
The caller says last dance of the night
The evening stars waltz
Gypsy, Gypsy look me in the eye
I'm tipsy, tipsy, toeing on the plywood floor
Spin me, spin me, spin me round
I'm dizzy, dizzy, won't you catch me now
I'm falling, Gypsy Stranger

Gypsy, Gypsy, look me in the eye
I'm tipsy, tipsy, toeing on the plywood floor
Spin me, spin me, spin me round
I'm dizzy, dizzy, won't you catch me now
I'm falling, Gypsy Stranger

The electric lights softly glow
As the band steps away from the microphone

I'm Wiley Post
Shannon Wurst

My first love, she was blue and white
A Lockheed Vega flying through the sky
With NR105-W written on her left side
And a wing span
41 feet wide

I joined the circus
A parachutist in the barnstorming circuit
I'm gonna fly around the world wait and see
I told Will Rogers, typing in my co-pilot seat

Winnie Mae Winnie Mae
Around the World in 7 days and 19 hours
Flying through the stratosphere
Winnie Mae Winnie Mae
1933, 40,000 feet above Chicago
People cheered

I flew a dream through the jet stream
Traded an eye for a flying machine
I quit the eighth grade, didn't get geography
But Winnie and Me, we're making history

Winnie Mae Winnie Mae
Around the world in 7 days and 19 hours
Flying through the stratosphere
Winnie Mae Winnie Mae
1933, 40,000 above Chicago
People cheered

Will, come with me
I built a new machine
She flew heavy, she flew wild
Aurora Borealis built like a bastard child
The engine quit and the plane plunged
Tore off her right wing
Point Borrow, Point Barrow, took Will
Will and Me

Winnie Mae Winnie Mae
Around the World in 7 days and 19 hours
Flying through the Stratosphere
Winnie Mae Winnie Mae

Ivory Bill
Shannon Wurst

My name is Ivory Bill
I'm a woodpecker you see
Now that we're friends, the story begins
Just call me Ivory

I knew what they were thinking
Another young bird with dreams
I had to get out so I flew down south
To seek a better tree

I spent some time in Hollywood trying to make it in the biz
But nobody's seeking a larvae-eating bird that sounds like this
XXX
So I practiced on my cry
(CAA CAA)
Rolled in soot black as spades
I'm here to play a black crow
Ivory Bill is my name

My Name is Ivory Bill
You ain't seen me in a long time til
You spotted me up in the tall, tall trees
Mosquito-eating, larvae-seeking
In the swamps of Arkansas
So come and see me and the family
Peck-peck-pecking in the trees

I was well respected
A John Wayne of the birds
A distinguished flight and a lonesome cry
That everybody heard
I showed 'em I could do it
I proved their bird brains wrong
Then the word came out no Ivory Bill left
Oh everybody's gone

My name is Ivory Bill
You ain't seen me in a long time til
You spotted me up in the tall, tall trees
Mosquito-eatin', larvae-seeking
In the swamps of Arkansas
So come and see me and the family
Peck-peck-pecking in the trees

Extinct I think they're saying
Loggers cut down the family tree
I washed off the disguise
And as the crow flies
I went back home to see
And there I found her waiting
A lonely Hillary
What's a bird to do
We flew the coop
And had a baby Ivory

My name is Ivory Bill
You ain't seen me in a long time til
You spotted me up in the tall, tall trees
Mosquito-Eating, larvae-seeking
in the swamps of Arkansas
So come and see me and the family
Peck-peck-pecking in the trees
So come and see me and the family
Peck-peck-pecking in the trees

White Walls
Shannon Wurst
New Folk Finalist Song
Telluride Troubadour Honorable Mention

These white walls they say it all
You're trying to get sober
You had the thrill and the feel and
Those all night benders
Now you got this two room apartment
And a Wal-Mart blender

Now you're sittin' in the spare room singing Willie's songs
Watching out the window, wondering what went so damn wrong
You're just living those country songs

It's solitaire instead of charades
You were the life of the party
Now you're left to distract from your old ways
With your three scrambled channels and your
Weekly AA

Now you're sitting in the spare room singing Merle's songs
Watching out the window, wondering what went so damn wrong
You're just living them country songs

They tell you to make an honest living
But what's more honest than a song?
You been living your life like a burned out star
Drinking PBR, you're the king of the dive bar

Now you're sittin' in the spare room singing Waylon's songs
Watching out the window, wondering what went so damn wrong
You're just living them, you're just living them
Oh, you're living them country songs

These white walls they say it all

Waiting for Your Water
Shannon Wurst

You're like the Rio Grande and
I'm the coast
But you dried up before the Gulf of Mexico
And I'm just waiting
Waiting for your water to flow

Well, you powered through
Down in Big Bend
They swim upon your shores
In the Santa Elena Canyon
I'm just waiting
Waiting for your water to flow

I'm waiting for your water
Waiting for your water
Waiting for your water to flow
I'm just waiting for your water
Waiting for your water
Waiting for your water to flow

You're like that river bend
Naked and exposed
Irrigated away like a
Puddle among stones
And I'm just waiting
Waiting for your water to flow

Oh how sweet a place
Our confluence would be
But I know you'll never
Make it out to sea
I'm just waiting
Waiting for your water to flow

I'm just waiting for your water
Waiting for your water
Waiting for your water to flow
I'm just waiting for your water
Waiting for your water
Waiting for your water to flow

Swamp Road
Shannon Wurst

Tonight I got a show in Pittsfield
The night before Altoona Penn State
I'll drive and drive and drive til I find
A twenty nine dollar place to stay

It's another dinner from the Conoco Station
Clean the empties from the floor board
The map in the back seat's crunched up
It don't get used much any more

For every mile I drive with this guitar in my car
Cold cup of cheap coffee in my hand
I wish I wish I was driving on that Swamp Road again

He'd be there just a picking on the banjo
Plucking watermelon from the vine
I'd say "Hey, I'm gonna stay for a while"
Honey that's just fine

I'd make those biscuits every morning
Makin' lovin' every night
Singing with nothing but a guitar on
And dancing by the full moon light

For every mile I drive with a guitar in my car
Cold cup of cheap coffee in my hand
I wish I wish I was driving on the Swamp Road again

Tonight I got a show west of Mississippi
there's a cover singing for the door
and plenty empty seats in front of me
I talk nice and sell them records to the boys
It's a pretty pillow case and a shady sleeper sofa
'least I got a place to stay
I'm dreamin dreamin of driving on that
Northbound highway

Oh for every mile I drive with this guitar in my car
Cold cup of cheap coffee in my hand
I wish I wish I was driving on that Swamp Road again

Oh for every mile I drive with this guitar in my car
Cold cup of cheap coffee in my hand
I wish I wish I was driving on that Swamp Road again
On that Swamp Road again

Blackbird Song
(J.Wagner)

It's planting season and the blackbirds are back
Hovering over hills that we could get at
You were growing tired of always planting corn
Then you'd curse at the field and always plant more

Those hills where we sang are thick with oak
The swing is still there but the birds got the rope
We laughed all night beneath that rash of stars
Wake up next to you in the back of the barn

Under that wet gray sky we worked the fields
We threw our hand in the harvest til our hearts were healed
We made all those songs ring like sacred hymns
That could cut through the cold like that wild whipping wind
That could cut through the cold like that wild whipping wind

The grass was as green as the grave of saints
At the bend in the river Carol Ann's little place
We spent all that summer wondering where to roam
Now the dust has turned to mud and the mud's turned to stone

Under that wet gray sky we worked the field
We threw our hands in the harvest til our hearts were healed
We made all those songs ring like sacred hymns
That could cut through the cold like that wild whipping wind
That could cut through the cold like that wild whipping wind

Insect choirs sing unlikely songs
In the mystery of silence where nothing goes wrong
In that sweet corn grass the snake sheds her skin
Find her slithering in the stables up around the bins

Under that wet gray sky we worked the field
We threw our hands in the harvest til our hearts were healed
We made all those songs ring like sacred hymns
That could cut through the cold like that wild whipping wind
That could cut through the cold like that wild whipping wind

Hard to Save
Shannon Wurst

You call me up,
Ask me out,
You're broke, I know,
I had no doubt
Well, maybe, baby,
You're just a little cheap

You have no gas,
You need a ride,
Baby, you're too drunk to drive,
It's hard to save a dime
Spending time on you

It's hard to save a dime
Spending time on you
You think I've got some eternal revenue
You got the gall
You got the nerve
Squandering all that I conserve
It's hard to save a dime
Spending time on you

You got mad
They didn't allow us to split
the All-You-Can-Eat at the
Golden Corral
You're stuffin' blueberry
muffins in my purse

You forgot your wallet
It's not your fault
It must have fallen out
While you were doing somersaults
It's hard to save a dime
Spending time on you

What's a girl to do
with your Takamine guitar
And your faded tattoos
Your unemployment check's
On its way and you've been
Playing Guitar Hero all day

You got the balls
You've got the nerve
Squandering all I conserve
It's hard to save a dime
Oh it's hard to save a dime
It's hard to save a dime
Spending time on you

Old Wood New Wires
Shannon Wurst
New Folk Finalist Song

His fingers were calloused from his love affair
Told me not to touch her but I did when he wasn't there
When he thought I was asleep
I heard Blackberry Blossom and Johnny on the TV
He had his guitar in his hand

We lost it all in '94
The flames spread quick but
We made it out the door
Standing there in the cold morning dew
We didn't even have a pair of shoes
He had his guitar in his hand

Old Wood and New Wire
Been saved from the flames of that raging fire
With a new set of strings
You ought to hear her sing
Old Wood New Wires

I came back home from bouncing 'round
Ain't no money to make in those mountain towns
He was playing Red Haired Boy
When he said he didn't need it anymore
He had his guitar in his hand

Old Wood New Wires
Been saved from the flames of that raging fire
With a new set of strings
You ought to hear her sing
Old Wood New Wires

Her wood is webbed like the lines on his face
There's marks there now I can't erase
Now she comes with me to the bar
We're trying to fill the empty tip jar
I got his guitar in my hand

Old Wood New Wires
Been saved from the flames of that ranging fire
With a new set of strings you ought to hear her sing
Old Wood New Wires

Sixteen Tons
(Merle Travis)

Sixteen Tons what do you get
Another Day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one morning the sun didn't shine
Picked up a shovel and walked to the mine
I loaded up sixteen tons of number nine coal
the strong boss said Lord bless my soul

You load sixteen tons what do you get
Another day older and you're deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me cause I can't go
I owe my soul the the company store

I was born one morning it was drizzling rain
Fighting and trouble is my middle name
I was born in a cane break to an ole Momma Lion
No high toned woman make me walk no line

You load sixteen tons what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

See me coming you better step aside
A lot of men didn't and a lot of men died
I've got one fist of iron and the other one is steel
If my left one won't get ya, my right one will

You load sixteen tons what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me cause I can't go
I owe my soul the company store
I own my soul to the company store

Buffalo
Shannon Wurst
Commissioned by Arkansas Heritage Council

I took a little hike to Hemmed-in-Hollow
Stood in the waterfall took a little swallow
Took a little hike to Hemmed-in-Hollow
Buffalo River I do roam

Boatin' and a fishin', swimmin' and a hikin'
Boatin' and a fishin', swimmin' and a hikin'
Boatin' and a fishin', swimmin' and a hikin'
Buffalo River I do roam

Buffalo your waters flow
Sometimes fast, sometimes slow
You twist and turn
Through the limestone
Buffalo calling me home

Don't flood the valley, don't dam the river
Don't flood the valley, don't dam the river
Don't flood the valley, don't dam the river
Buffalo calling me home

Birds and elk and fishes and trees
Birds and elk and fishes and trees
Birds and elk and fishes and trees
Buffalo calling me home

Buffalo your waters flow
Sometimes fast, sometime slow
You twist and turn through the limestone
Buffalo calling me home
Buffalo calling me

Our Love
Shannon Wurst

As fast as the river, was my love for you
Fast as the river, was my love for you
Like the Brown's Canyon water
My love slows down too

As deep as the snow, was my love for you
Deep as the snow, was my love for you
Like the New England Winter
My love melts down too

Hi de hodel oh oh te
Hi de hodel oh oh te
Oh our love wasn't meant to be

As hot as the desert, was my love for you
As hot as the desert, was my love for you
Like those Mojave Nights
My love cools down too

Hi de hodel oh oh te
Hi de hodel oh oh te
Oh our love wasn't meant to be

As blue as the mountains, was my love for you
As blue as the mountains, was my love for you
Like that Blue Ridge Parkway, my love curved away from you

Hi de hodel oh oh te
Hi de hodel oh oh te
Oh our love wasn't meant to be

Hi de hodel oh oh te
Hi de hodel oh oh te
Oh our love wasn't meant to be
Oh our love wasn't meant to be
